Mold and Indoor Air Quality

Indoor air quality is an issue for occupants of new and recently-constructed buildings as well as old historic structures. Private and commercial property owners face five indoor air quality issues that affect the health of the building occupants, the integrity of the building itself, and liability exposure.

Mold:

Mold spores are everywhere in the air and dust. When, in the warm environment of a building, mold spores come in contact with water from such water intrusions as roof leaks, broken water pipes, or poor landscape design, the spores can begin to grow in as little as 48 hours. Visit our Mold Photo Gallery for examples of typical mold-causing problems.

Asbestos:

A mineral fiber known for its pliancy, its ability to withstand heat, and its negative health effects when inhaled into the lungs, asbestos was used in buildings constructed before 1980 in such products as drywall materials, popcorn ceiling finishes, and fire proofing.

Lead:

A highly toxic metal, lead is primarily found in paint used in buildings constructed before the 1978 ban on lead-based paints. When ingested as lead dust or paint chips or inhaled as lead dust, lead can cause health effects in children (e.g., brain and nervous system damage, hyperactivity) and adults (e.g., reproductive problems, high blood pressure).

Airborne Vehicular Soot:

An invisible particulate pollutant, airborne vehicular soot is found in the air near roadways and high traffic areas.

Radon Gas:

Tasteless, odorless, and invisible, radon gas is a product of the breakdown of uranium in rock, soil, and water. It can be found in homes, schools, and commercial buildings all across the United States and is the second leading cause of lung cancer.
